Why Boycott Yahoo?  The short story is that if Yahoo can cave to the demands of the Right, they can also cave to the economic demands of the left and center.  

The long story is that Yahoo hosts a wide range of mailing list.  Some discuss parenting issues.  Some discuss ADHD.  Some discuss Harry Potter.  Some discuss the Bible.  Some discuss Star Trek.  The array is endless.

Some of these lists though, they discuss adult topics and they discuss sex.  They were created by people to discuss these topics in a friendly environment with out fear of recrimination.   Do you feel all alone and are you a victim of incest?  Join a mailing list.  Discuss it with people who have had similar experinces.  Get those feelings out on the Internet to others who have shared that experince.  Do you swing?  Are you looking to find other people like yourself who swing too?  Join a mailing list.  Find those people.  Do you read and write fan fiction?  Does the idea of Spock getting it on with Captain Kirk turn you all to mush?  Find them the perfect couple?  Want to share stories about them getting together?  Join a mailing list.  Are you a teenager unsure of your sexuality but pretty sure you're not straight?  Join a mailing list and chat with others like yourself.

There are many mailing lists that can be construed as adult.  They cover a broad range of topics.  They help a lot of people and bring a lot of people together.  They help to create a virtual community in cyberspace....

.... and Yahoo is shutting them down at the behest of the Christian Right who is threatening to boycott Yahoo and their sponsors.

Does the Christian Right have to join these lists and partake in these discussions?  No....  It's their choice not to do that.  The indivudals that make up the Christian Right can make the indivudal choice not to partake in mailing lists they find offensive or immoral.

This choice not to partake in those discussions is their choice and their choice alone.  Most of the groups they oppose are legal groups who do not actively try to subvert Christian morals and ethics.  Rather, these groups provide a place for people to communicate if their morals and ethics differ from that of the right.  Existence does not create subversion. The Left and Center does not seek to thrust its moral and ethical code on the Right.  The vast majority of the Center and Left believes that this is a personal choice.

Which leads us to the question: Why boycott Yahoo if it is a personal choice?  The simple thing is at this point, we are not advocating a Boycott of Yahoo.  We're sitting, waiting and watching. If Yahoo! takes steps to continue its removal of those lists, then we, the indivudals of the Left and the Center will boycott Yahoo.  The Christian Right's views are that of the minority.  They are forcing them on, indivudals of the Center and Left.  They are denying us the right to make the decision to be affiliated with those groups or not.  They are using their economic power to force Yahoo to cave into their demands.  We, the indivudals of the Left and Center, have that same ability too and we resent the tactics of the Right... 

But at the same time, we can't sit back and let the Christian Right run over an organization, a business, that has supported our ability to grow as indivudals.  If they win, we loose.  If they win, Yahoo looses.

So, we're forced to make Yahoo see that people do support their hosting of LEGAL adult mailig lists by threatening to boycott them if they cave in to the demands of the right.

Please Yahoo, we value your services and we support you.  Don't force us into the untenable position of having to boycott your site and your advertisers by giving into the demands of the Right!
